Songs of worship...

Father of Lights and I Think of You are based on James 1:17 and Psalm 63, respectively.

In our worship, it is good to sing songs with several verses and great theological depth (think "Jesus Shall Reign," the song that previously occupied this space).  It is also good to sing songs with fewer words, more repeats, but still a sound, biblical message, as we have with these two songs.  There is nothing wrong with short, repetitive songs when they are truly saying something (think Revelation 4:8!).

Father of Lights
Father of lights, You delight in Your children.
Every good and perfect gift comes from You.

Father of lights, You never change; You have no turning.
Every good and perfect gift comes from You.

I Think of You
All of the day I remember You,
And I think of You in the night,
Because You are my help;
Because You are my Strong Tower,
I think of You.

All of the day I hold onto You,
And You lift me up in Your hand,
Because You are my help,
Because You are my Strong Tower,

I sing in the shadow of Your wings,
And I think of You.

Consider the words of these songs and how they are rooted in the Scriptures.

Father of Lights
Father of lights, You delight in Your children.
Every good and perfect gift comes from You.

Father of lights, You never change; You have no turning.
Every good and perfect gift comes from You.

James 1:17 (NIV)
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

As you can see, the writer took this one lovely verse from James and created an entire song of praise and thanksgiving to God.  "Father of lights" hearkens back to the beginning, in Genesis 1:14, when God placed the lights in the heavens to light the earth.  From the beginning until today, every good thing has come from our Father!  And amazingly, this great God, who created the universe, cares for each one of us.  How could we respond, other than praise and thanksgiving?

Let's look at the second song, alongside Psalm 63:6-8:

I Think of You
All of the day I remember You,
And I think of You in the night,

Psalm 63:6
On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches of the night.

Because You are my help;
Because You are my Strong Tower,
I sing in the shadow of Your wings,
And I think of You.

Psalm 63:7
Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.

All of the day I hold onto You,
And You lift me up in Your hand,

Psalm 63:8
My soul clings to you;
your right hand upholds me.

May we always seek You and find strength in You. May we ever worship You with all that we are.  We praise You, Lord, for Your blessings upon us in Christ!
